When I received my invitation to join Sephora’s Play! Subscription box, I was intrigued and I signed up immediately. The invitation stated that I would receive 5 deluxe samples monthly plus a bonus fragrance sample. In April’s box, I also received a how-to brochure/booklet with a “Play” card that gives 50 extra Beauty points when used with an in-store beauty purchase. The theme of April’s box was “the it Crowd” and the products that I received are said, by Sephora, to be industry favorites from brands with innovative formulas.

Final Thoughts: My love for all things Sephora is well known but I’m in subscription box overload right now and I need for these boxes to be exciting and new and personalized and it just is not any of those things for me. Sephora is already a sample heavy store and I love that about them but I need for this to be different. I need for these samples to feel like they aren’t re-packaging and re-purposing leftover samples from the warehouse that should have been gifts with purchase or maybe should have been used in a brand promotion.
Now, I know the box is only $10 but I would definitely pay more to have a box that feels substantial, or that is curated for me personally or even a box with fewer products that are larger in size. This box should be a freebie gift for VIBs or VIB Rouges instead of a subscription box or maybe even used as an incentive to purchase. It feels like I’m paying for the packaging, shipping, and marketing rather than actually getting a true feel for the brands in Sephora. So if you can’t tell already, I’m disappointed and pretty over it. But because I love Sephora and they are typically pretty dope, I’m hopeful that the box will get better over time and I will keep my subscription for awhile longer but come on let’s get some creativity going with these boxes.
Let me know what you think about these subscription boxes lately. Are they usually worth it to you or are you over it?
